Mens Club and Seniors Latest Results

Mens Results: May 15th 2016: If convicts were still sentenced to hard labour they could have had the day off as the sun was splitting the stones on Sunday and our members took advantage of this by rushing to the course to scare the fauna with exposed white legs that the ducks are not the better of yet. As an aside a very famous Disney character made his debut on the big screen on May 15th 1928, and I am in no way suggesting the golf of our members this weekend was “Mickey Mouse” in its nature but only mad dogs and Englishmen come out in the midday sun! Three men however rose above the chaff and claimed immortality. They were: 1st Philip Coleman with 58 nett, 2nd Ronan Briody 60 nett and 3rd Our Glorious Leader Gary Corcoran with 61nett. Gentlemen we salute you.

Mid Week Warriors: As usual our “Senior” members put the rest of us to shame with their competitiveness and participation, as the weekly scrambles continue under the watchful eye of Finbarr O’Reilly. Last weeks winning team was in first place: Maura Tierney, Mary Hopkins, Peter Curran, Canice Hogan with a score of 55.8 and in second place Angela O’Dwyer, Brian O’Brien, Pat Fitzpatrick and the ringmaster of retirees himself Finbarr O’Reilly. Well done all and well done Finbarr on the continued organisation.

Club Classic: Ladies and Gentleman our club classic is being held the 3/4/5 of June and is a 4 person team scramble costing €100 per team. There are more prizes than you can shake a stick at, in fact you will be genuinely disappointed if you do not win one. This Classic is not just a fantastic and essential fund raiser for the club it is also a great way for us to show golfing friends and family what a social, welcoming club we are, so get involved and have a great day. Please note the PRO will also be attempting on the day to beat his ham sandwich consumption record set last year.

Mid Week Wrinkly Warriors

The level of golf has improved dramtically in the last couple of weeks with the return of our Seniors for their midweek competitions. These competitions under the supervision of Finbarr O'Reilly are a great success and a wonderful testimony to his organisational skills and motivational techniques to get such great numbers in attendance. The latest outing saw the team of Maura Tierney, Marua Hopkins, Peter Curran and Canice Hogan in first place pipping the team of ANgela O'Dwyer, Brian O'Brien, Pat Fitzpatrick and Finbarr himself. Men's News - April 17th 2016

The Gladiators came out into the auditorium of Virginia Golf Club blinking in the sun in readiness for the long season ahead after the Spring League has truly sprung. This is the last competition before the first Golfer of the Year event allowing the members to stretch their golfing muscles and show the rest who is ready for the challenge and who will not see their name written in legend. The man who came out victorious, Charlton Heston like from this weeks tussle was Vivian Connell with a fantastic score of 58 points, a great result Vivian your odds have been cut for the Golfer of the Year prize. When there's a first, there is always a second and that was Peter Foran with a great score of 60. Peter was moaning all Spring League in relation to his form, as the Bard would say, I think the Lady doth protest too much. Well done Peter.

The first Golfer of the Year event is this weekend and the timesheet is posted in the clubhouse, get your name in to challenge last years winner Stephen Smith. Also the club matchplays are also up for participation, if your not down, your not in and the bragging rights for winning some of these will keep you going for years.

Ladies Breffni Shield

The Breffni Shield was started in Cavan by the late Dorrie Smyth, a low handicap golfer who had a genuine interest in promoting social golf.  It was then confined to the Cavan area but after the war it was decided to open it to many clubs.  This lasted for 20 years but then the format was changed to allow the qualifying round be held at all home clubs and the final to be held at clubs in rotation which is the present format. The winners of this year's qualifying round at Virginia Golf Club were Bernadette Daly & Maureen Donohoe with a score of 68. In 2nd place were Pauline Clarke & Martina Briody with a score of 68.5. Best of luck to the winners when they represent Virginia Golf Club in Greenore Golf Club on 16th May.
