This Sunday January 1st why not swing into 2017 with a stableford competition with a shotgun start at 9am and 1pm.
Happy New Year!!!
This weekend we had a Turkey Shoot with the full Christmas dinner up for grabs. That went to Dave Reilly in 1st place so a good Christmas feast for Dave this year. Second Place and with eith the ham in the pot was club President Victor Nesbitt and in third place and bringing home the wine was Vincent Brady. The captain was unfortunate not to be again in the winners enclosure and was only beaten by countback.
Congratulations all.

Sunday October 23
On the weekend that saw our neighbors claim their first Senior GAA championship and Padraig Harrington break an 8 year winning drought, our own members picked up the clubs again to do battle. Thankfully for some of the names that got to the top of the field none of them have had to wait as long to get a win in recent times. This week saw Stephen Smith come out on top with Conor McEvoy and Peter Foran very close behind. Well done lads great play.
Sunday October 30
With the weekend that was in it its fair to say that none of the members put in any scary scores, or made a complete Ghoul of themselves. It was however good to see some new names coming through the ranks and challenging the established order that has developed in recent months. This week we saw Steven Kockott conjure up a magical round of golf coming in with 43 points, trailing well behind, Trump like, were Philip Coleman on 38 points and Brendan Fox also on 38 points. Well done everyone on a great round of golf.
Special mention has to made has to be given to our club Captain who won a raffle, I mean table of merit, to represent the club at the Titliest Invitational at the Belfry Golf Club last week. This saw Gary search for, find and use his Driver for the first time in 3 years and we are sure he did us all proud. Well done Captain great to see our club represented in the big time. Last years Captain took a picture with last years Belfry warrior and it hangs in the clubhouse, expect a new photo of Gary shaking hands with himself shortly.
Mid Week Warriors
Just prior to their seasonal break for hibernation, our senior members took to the fairways once more with feeling. These club legends started this weekly ritual, seven years ago under the watchful eye of Finbarr O'Reilly and without whom I have no doubt its success is hinged upon. In these impersonal times any group that encourages retired and new people to meet and socialise is not only vital but a very important part of any clubs life. Last weeks 9 hole Shamble (yes Shamble) was won on the Ladies front by Mary Whelan, second Angela O'Dwyer, third Eva Williams. For the Gents 1st Canice Hogan, 2nd John Clarke, 3rd Alex McAuley. All members retired (again) to the Riverfront Hotel for lunch and to plot their successes when the group reawaken post winter slumber in May 2017. Well done everyone, heres to 2017.

Mens Club Results:
There were 12 Titans in Greek mythology the product of the amorous coupling of Uranus and Ge and the word Titanic refers to the sheer size and power of these Titans. Well Sundays competition was contested between a couple of our clubs golfing Titans, namely Stephen Smith and Peter Gill. Both of these single figure men tamed our course with Stephen completing his round -1 gross just edging out Peter. Phenomenal golf Gentlemen and worthy winners this week. Congratulations.
Speaking of Titans, James O'Brien our colossus amongst club competition secretarys not only won the 2's this weekend but also secured the Golfer of the Year title last weekend. Congratulations James and well deserved for your consistency this year.
Zeus like and not to be out done by his son, Peadar Gill snatched the club Fourball matchplay title this weekend partnering with Frank Fahy. Many discussed the decision of the Mayo manager to drop his goalie last weekend as a cruel decision, but Peadar is Franks third partner in 3 finals in 3 years, so Frank showed he can pick the partners when needs be, and I heard he played all the golf so dont expect Peadar to tee off with Frank in next years dream team.
Please note that the Towns Cup is to be played for on Sunday the 16th.
Midweek Warriors: Our original legends have 2 days left this year of outings so the chance to win this competition is ending soon. This week saw Rosaleen McHugh, Dan Courtney, Canice Hogan edge out Sheila Courtney, Frank Dolan and Niall Maguire. Well done all.

Vice Captains Prize
Oscar Wilde was once asked to give his opinion of another man and said, “He hasdn’t a single redeeming vice”. Thankfully at Virginia Golf Club we have a redeeming vice, namely our Vice Captain Sean McEvoy and it was his prize this weekend that our members were attempting to snatch. The weather which invariably is becoming the extra member to everyones fourball was both cruel and kind but in the end everyone battled whatever elements they faced until someone came out on top. That someone being Vincent Brady, followed closely by PJ McNicholas and then Brendan Fox. Well done gentlemen and well done Sean on your dry run for the big one next year.
Mid Week Warriors
Continuing the Wilde theme, the great Oscar also pronounced that “The tragedy of old age is not that one is old, but that one is young”, and it is this youthful exuberance that sees our mid week warriors flying around the course everyweek having more fun than most members have every Sunday!. Last weeks winners were as follows: 1st Emily McHugo, Liz Murphy, Louis McQuade, C Hogan and F. O’Reilly (a 5 ball?), in second place was Eva Williams, Isobel Davidson, Tommy Boyle and Barney O’Reilly. Well done everyone.
September 18: This weekend saw the behmoths of Dublin and Mayo fight for the right to hold what they believe is the ultimate medal in Irish sport, a medal competed for so ferociously that the scars of battle are felt long after the affray. Little do they know that a Virginia Golf Club monthly medal is equally as competitive with the spoils of war going to those who are willing to battle it out in all conditions, month in and month out. This month we saw the medal go to Stephen McCabe, well done Stephen no need for a replay for you! Division 1 went to Vivian O’Connell, Division 2 went to James “don’t mention the 18th” O’Brien and Division 3 to B Fox. Well done all.
