Spring League 2019

The final results of The Chestnut Tree Spring League will be announced on Friday night, in the Chestnut Tree, at 8:30pm. Paul Glackin, in the Chestnut Tree, has been a loyal sponsor of the League and we are delighted to be able to give something back.

The League has been an outstanding success with 64 entrants and large turnouts every week. The format of the League meant its outcome was far from certain up to the last ball being struck.

Next weekend will see a Singles Stableford with the following weekend (Easter) hosting a four-ball better ball. We , then , to move to full qualifying as the course should have fully recovered from the recent maintenance works.

The Chestnut Tree Spring League Round 6

All to play for as we head for the final round of The Chestnut Tree Spring League 2019.

Arthur Tormay’s Team 3 hold a slender lead over Vivian Connell’s Team 5 and, with the 2 lowest scores in the 7 weeks to be discarded by each team, the possibility of change at the top of the table still holds. Adrian Kelly’s Team 7 are also still in with a shout, only a small bit further back.

Brendan Clarke, with an excellent, 45pts, took the individual prize for Round 6 while Arthur Tormay, Martin Sherry and Peadar Gill shared the €2 2s on 18th kitty.

The final round of the league will be held over the 5th/6th & 7th of April

The Chestnut Tree Spring League Week 5

Wintry weather and sanded greens tested the golfers of Virginia this week as Round 5 of The Chestnut Tree Spring League took place.

With each team’s 2 worst scores to be dropped it’s still very close with all to play for.

Pat Connell, with an excellent 41pts secured the individual prize this week with Vivian Connell’s Team 5 edging out the League front-runners, Arthur Tormay’s Team 3, by 3 points. In the overall standing Arthur’s boys still lead the way but only by 3 points from Vivian’s charges.

The Chestnut Tree Spring League 3rd March

Wintry weather hit the Chestnut Tree Spring League this week with cold wet conditions adversely affecting the play. Teams 5, 7 and 8, led by Vivian Connell, Adrian Kelly and Seamus Sheridan respectively, all carded 100 points in what was a close contest with Seamus carding an excellent 42pts to take the individual prize for the week. Meanwhile Arthur Tormay’s Team 3 still leads the way in the team competition albeit with his lead now 5 points. With each team’s two worst scores to be discarded the contest is still very much alive.

Individual winner Seamus Sheridan 42pts.

No winner of €2 2s on 18th

This week will see the greens being hollow-cored and sanded, a vital exercise to maintain their health. We, in Virginia, pride ourselves on having some of the finest greens in the country and have to put up with a minor inconvenience, twice a year, to ensure this stays this way.

Congratulations are due to VGC member, Liam Brady, an outstanding golfer, on his inclusion in the Cavan GAA Senior squad for the National League match v Tyrone this weekend. Here’s hoping it’s the start of a long inter-county career. Also good to see Irish golfers doing well with Leona Maguire carding a very good result in the  ActewAGL Canberra Classic, while Gavin Moynihan, of Baileboro extraction, finishing an excellent 12th place in the Oman Open.

The Chestnut Tree Spring League 2019

The 2019 season kicked off “properly” this past weekend with the start of the annual Spring League , kindly sponsored by The Chestnut Tree. This year we have 8 teams  with 64 players playing in Week 1. The League will cover 7 weekends with the top 5 weeks’ scores to count and each team’s top 5 players scores to make up the Weekly total. Each week will also see an individual winner.

Peter Kermath showed the beneficial effects of his recent shoulder surgery with an outstanding 41pts to claim the Individual prize on Week 1 while Arthur Tormay led his team to an early lead in the League. It’s still very early with many twists and turns before the destiny of the title will be decided.
